- Get the right fit. Ballet shoes are quite similar to regular shoes in terms of fit. While there is a conception that ballet shoes should be bought small because they stretch, they only stretch about a quarter of a shoe size.
- Decide between canvas and leather, the two most common materials for ballet shoes. While leather shoes are considered tougher, cooler and more adaptable to the feet, canvas will be more regular from pair to pair and will also suit heavier dancers better.
- Think about full sole or split sole shoes. Each type has its own disadvantages and advantages and much of the difference is a matter of preference. Full sole shoes are generally a bit cheaper, while split soles hug the arches of your foot more when you point.
- Buy casual ballet-style shoes.
